Casio EX-ZS5

Relatively few details were available on the Casio EXILIM EX-ZS5 digital camera at press time, but we do know that the camera is aimed at the entry-level market, and features a 14.1 megapixel image sensor. This is coupled to an EXILIM-branded 5x optical zoom lens with actual focal lengths ranging from 4.7 to 23.5mm, equating to a useful 26mm wide angle, and a 130mm telephoto. Maximum aperture is f/2.8 at wide angle, but falls to a rather dim f/6.5 at telephoto.

Images are framed and reviewed on a 2.7-inch LCD display, as the Casio ZS5 forgoes any form of optical or electronic viewfinder. The EXILIM ZS5 includes 23 scene modes, dubbed “Best Shot” modes in Casio parlance, each of which includes example images and descriptions to convey their purpose to the less experienced photographer. A built-in flash strobe is offered, but no information is yet available on its performance. In addition to still images, the Casio EX-ZS5 can also capture standard definition VGA video.

We don’t currently have details on the type of battery used in the ZS5, but do know a little about the charging system. Unusually, the battery can be recharged in-camera via the USB port, either from an attached computer or a supplied AC adapter.

The Casio EXILIM ZS5 ships in the USA from March 2011, priced at around US$100. Available body colors include black, silver, orange, and pink.
